Overview

Lyanna has had a difficult life, especially for a noble. But the Goddess Earth Mother needs her help. Men are destroying Earth Mother, and Lyanna is tasked with uniting with the resistance to use her powers to stop the men.

She finds an unexpected ally in fellow noble Cassius. He is feared as an executioner and a practitioner of blood magic. But he is nothing but king and protective of Lyanna. She tries to keep her feelings for him locked away. They can’t afford to be distracted. Earth Mother is dying.

Positives

I absolutely loved the world the author has built. The author provides an index in the beginning to help you dive into it headfirst. Once I started, I didn’t want to stop. The romance between Lyanna and Cassius slowly builds as they genuinely get to know one another.

Lyanna is such a complex character. She has her strength and cares for all things. But we also see her vulnerability- her mental illness. There is talk of suicide ideations and self-harm present. The author handled it with care, so it doesn’t overwhelm the reader.

Negatives

The character development, even for supporting characters, is fantastic. But I feel Cassius could have used more work. His cold-blooded killer persona is complex to associate with how gentle he is. It feels like we’re missing a crucial part of him. Did the bond he made change part of him to be more bloodthirsty?

Recommendations

Rating: 5 out of 5.

The author handles so many complex topics with grace. From mental health to the climate crisis, it builds the story, not takes it away. I’m giving it five stars. The issue with Cassius doesn’t hurt the plot or even the romance. I can’t wait to see what else the author has in store.

I received a complimentary Advanced Reader Copy(ARC) of the book for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own and reflect my genuine reading experience. Receiving the ARC did not influence my evaluation, and I was not compensated for this review.
