The Traitor Queen by Danielle L. Jensen

The Traitor Queen continues Lara and Aren’s complex story of betrayal and love amid political intrigue. Aren is imprisoned, while Lara conspires for his rescue, grappling with her past actions.…

Betrayal may have broken them—but love, regret, and rebellion might just stitch the pieces back together – if the kingdom doesn’t burn first.

The Traitor Queen is the second book in The Bridge Kingdom. It’s a continuation of Lara and Aren’s story.

Overview

Aren is now being held prisoner by the King of Maridrira, who happens to be his father-in-law. His wife, Lara, AKA The Traitor Queen, is secretly conspiring with her sisters to rescue Aren. While he is grateful for her assistance, it does nothing to calm the pain he and his people feel because of her betrayal.

Nothing is going as planned. How can Aren rescue and protect his people? He just needs something to work in his favor! How can Lara continue to live with the regret of the damage she’s done? Will Aren forgive her? Even if he does, will his people forgive her?

Positives

You really get to see Aren and Lara’s relationship grow in The Traitor Queen. They are finally beginning to understand each other. But it may be too little too late. The entire Ithicana Kingdom hates her and will likely never forgive her.

We get more involved in the political intrigue at play. There are more players in the game now, and each has their own priorities. So, as a reader, we’re constantly wondering who to trust.

Negatives

I can see some readers having issues with the ending. It’s not a solid conclusion, but I can support it. Remember, that this is a fantasy, our physics don’t apply. Also, that superstitions are powerful.

Recommendations

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I give The Traitor Queen four stars. Lara and Aren are put through the ringer, through fewer snakes this time. We are introduced to our next couple without realizing it, but more on that in The Inadequate Heir.

Narration Notes

Lauren Fortgang and James Patrick Cronin continue narrating Lara’s and Aren’s story. While I have no issues with them, the instrumental between every chapter is a little annoying, especially when the chapters are short. The audiobook is an Audible exclusive.
