The Inadequate Heir by Danielle L. Jensen

Zarrah came to kill a prince. Instead, she found a man who listened—who saw her not as a weapon, but as a woman haunted by grief. Each stolen meeting unraveled…

She crossed enemy lines to kill a prince. Instead, she found the one man who could unravel her vengeance—and her heart.

The Inadequate Heir is the third book in the Bridge Kingdom series. While we have a new romance, many events occur at the same time as the first two books. So, I do suggest reading in order.

Overview

Zarrah is the niece of Valcotta’s queen and the future heir. She is one of the most trusted generals with a thirst for revenge for the murder of her mother by the Meridrina king. One night, she lets her anger take over, and she crosses the river to the Meridrinian side of the city in search of the Prince to slay him.

She doesn’t find the Prince, but decides to steal correspondence she thinks might be of use. A handsome Meridrinian officer confronts her. Something draws them together. They continue to meet to discuss their dreams and wishes. A forbidden love is formed. But what will happen when their true identities are revealed to each other?

The Inadequate Heir

Positives

I love Zarrah’s and Keris’s romance.  Keris is tormented by his past; everyone he loves dies. He usually keeps people at arm’s length now, for their protection. But his feelings for Zarrah are too strong.

It’s interesting getting this alternative perspective of events that occurred in Bridge Kingdom and The Traitor Queen. You have to pay attention, though, to figure out where you are in the timeline. I really enjoy it.

Negatives

While I may enjoy the concurrent timeline, others may find it confusing. The Inadequate Heir also ends on a cliffhanger – a big one. Luckily, we have The Endless War ready to go!

Recommendations

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Their romance is my favorite in the series. The Inadequate Heir is five stars.  Zarrah and Keris both have their flaws, but they do their best to overcome them and do what they believe is right.

Narration Notes

New romance, new narrators. Summer Morton and Michael Pauley take over the narration and do a great job. I’m also happy to note that Audible did away with the fanfare before each chapter. They now do a sound effect that suits the character’s location, like crashing waves when they’re on a ship.
