She was the bait. He was the ruin. But in the fog, betrayal births redemption—and love becomes the fiercest kind of magic.

Yet another new aspect of life on Dakkar. Now we meet some human refugees, looking for any safety they can find.
Overview
Mina is at the mercy of her human group. They perceive her as weak because she struggles to articulate her thoughts. She is forced to lure a horde king through the toxic fog so they can use him in a dark magic ritual. While holding the Horde King, Wrune, captive, she tends to his wounds, for which she is beaten. When she helps him escape, he claims her as his prize. Their desires for each other are undeniable.
Positives
I loved how Wrune’s name was a symbol for their story. In Dakkari, the word means destruction -ruin, but it also means second chance or rebirth. When Wrune first sees Mina in the fog, he believes she is a gift from the goddess. When he realizes her betrayal, it crushes him and makes him second-guess his beliefs. Through their relationship, he grows from being primal and possessive to trusting and understanding.
Negatives
It must be a requirement to be a brooding male to be a horde king. It’s not enough for me to dislike the characters, but some may take issue with it.
Recommendations
I’m giving it a 4.5. There are many good moments, but overall, the first two books are significantly better. Once you have read this book, you will need to read the next book to complete the overarching story of the fog.
Narration Notes:
Mina has a stutter, which is challenging to mimic accurately. Lia is fantastic. It sounds authentic on 1x speed and 2.8x.
