Enki hears a human’s cry for help—and something deep within him answers. But saving Layla means confronting the ghost in his mind and the monsters aboard.
Shattered Silence is the second book in the Darkstar Mercenaries Series.
Overview
On their way back to the Kordolian Fleet Station, Enki intercepts a distress signal from a human female. Enki and his team don’t even question it; they immediately alter course to assist.
Layla has had some rotten luck lately. She was so relieved when she heard Enki’s voice, but of course, she couldn’t be that lucky. She’s been brought aboard a Kordolian ship of the old empire. Arrogant, elitists who only want her so they can experiment on her to solve their fertility problems.
Enki made a promise that he will keep. Now, if that wraith in his head would leave him alone, he might be able to rescue that human, whose voice calmed him. He just hopes he gets there before they begin their torture.

Positives
Just when you think you’ve got the formula for a good Kordolian romance, Anna Craven adds something you didn’t expect. At first, you believe Enki is the typical grouchy alien warrior, then you find out it’s because he has a hitchhiker in his brain. That would make anyone cranky. This hitchhiker plays a massive role in both Enki’s and Layla’s character arcs.
Negatives
I remember the first time I read this. I was upset there wasn’t more about the Tharian species. But don’t fret, the Tharians are a highlight in the next book, Fractured Souls.
Recommendations
I give it five stars. I love the new angle of a passenger in their mind. Anna Craven has created such a rich world. It’s a great place to escape to.
Narration Notes
J.F. Harding narrates the Darkstar Mercenaries series. It is crazy how many distinct voices he can create.
