Quicksilver by Callie Hart

Saeris Fane wakes in a world she doesn’t understand, with powers she doesn’t know how to wield. As the only alchemist who can forge relics to end a monstrous war,…

She was sentenced to die—but Death had other plans. Now Saeris must master alchemy, navigate a realm of Fae, and survive a bond she never asked for.

Quicksilver is the first book in the Fae & Alchemy series.

Overview

Saeris Fane has worked hard for most of her life to survive and protect her brother. She spent years pickpocketing and stealing without getting caught. But one mistake changed everything. Guards dragged her before the queen to face judgment. The Queen orders her death, but Death has other plans.

When she awakens, it’s in the realm of the Fae, and she’s a bit confused. They tell her that her weird trick with metal is a power called alchemy. They need an alchemist to create relics. Relics are the key to ending the war with Malcolm and his monsters. A deal is struck. The only problem is that she doesn’t know how to make relics.

Positives

Absolutely, fantastic world-building. The alchemy concept is refreshing. It definitely helps Quicksilver stand out in the growing world of romantasy. It’s not enough anymore to have rich world-building; readers thirst for what’s new and exciting. Callie Hart rises to the challenge.

When tropes are continuously used, sometimes the requirements get blurred. Enemies-to-lovers can easily be subject to personal opinion, at least in my experience. Saeris’ and Kingfisher’s relationship is a pretty good example of enemies-to-lovers. Personally, I like a little more emotional depth as the feelings change, but one can argue that the “fated mate” influences that. Once they begin to see each other as something other than enemies, the bond snaps into place.

Negatives

There are a few pasts where the plot slows down and the events may not be needed for the story. They didn’t affect my love of the world, characters, and plot. What left a bad taste was the ending and how similar it was to A Court of Thorns and Roses. In an effort to minimize spoilers, I can’t say much more.

Recommendations

Rating: 4 out of 5.

If you love epic fantasy romances, Quicksilver should be on your list. I give it four stars. Once I got about halfway, I couldn’t stop.
