Magic, madness, and mercy collide in Vienne and Davik’s story. As trauma surfaces and time runs out, love becomes the most powerful gift of all.

In this third book of the Horde Kinds of Dakkar, we begin to enter the fantasy genre. Our characters possess magical gifts bestowed upon them by the Goddess. This is just the next step in Draven’s world-building.
Overview
This time we follow Vienne’s and Davik’s romance. She is a prisoner of the Ghertun, who is sent to find a heart stone for her masters. There is a deadline; if she doesn’t return to the Ghertun within a few weeks, she will begin to suffer deadly withdrawals from the drug the Ghertun use to control their slaves. Will she make it in time to save her family?
Positives
So, this is my least favorite of the series, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a great story. Zoey takes on the difficult task of trauma. The horde king’s madness is warranted; he suffered many traumas, one of which is rarely depicted in literature. Male survivors of sexual violence are seldom represented in books. Especially romance, but Zoey expertly intertwines it into our horde king’s character and hurdles our protagonist’s reactions to this confession with compassion.
Negatives
Like I said, the fact that it’s my least favorite doesn’t mean anything in this case. Everything is so well written, I just relate better to the other heroines.
Recommendations
I have to give it a 4.5. You could read this as a stand-alone, but I think trying to understand the world and culture while dealing with the complexities of these characters will make it too busy and unenjoyable.
Narration Notes:
Narrated by Lia Langola and Aaron Shedlock- don’t change perfection! These narrators do a fantastic job of giving each couple their own uniqueness.
