Her Dragon Daddy by Roxie Ray

Her Dragon Daddy follows Ava, a single mother who raised her son after Maverick disappeared 18 years ago. When both families return to Black Claw, they confront their past. Mav…

He left without a word. She raised their son alone. Now fate—and fire—bring them back to Black Claw, where love might rise from the ashes.

Her Dragon Daddy is the first book in the Black Claw Dragons series.

Overview

One night, 18 years ago, Maverick and his family left town without a trace. Ava did her best to find them; she wanted to let Mav know he has a son. She failed and set about raising her baby by herself. Years later, she marries and has another child. When that marriage blows up in her face, she and her two children must return to Black Claw.

Mav and his family have returned to Black Claw. He wonders what ever happened to his only love. He hates that he had to drop everything to leave. As he drives by Ava’s grandmother’s house, he notices lights. Could she be back? Could he get a second chance?

Positives

I imagine Ava is like any other single mother with a teenage son and a perceptive daughter. She finds a balance between work and raising her children. She is surprisingly forgiving to Mav, but extremely cautious.

Mav undergoes a great redemption arc. He has some catching up to do to fit into this already-made family. It takes almost losing everything for him to get everything into perspective. I also love how he is so taken with Hailey, too.

Negatives

I do have a little issue with how Mav and his family left. I get the reasoning, but supposedly Mav’s parents were like parents to her, too. Wouldn’t they have at least let her know? Even a letter?

My other dislike is the world-building. I love the shifter structure and allies. But that’s all we really get to see. The little bit of love we do get is a bit vague. It is enough to present the story, but it could’ve gone deeper.

Recommendations

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I give it four stars. I’ve still listened to it many times and haven’t regretted buying it. I also acknowledge that more could have been done.

Narration Notes

Phoenix McKay narrates Her Dragon Daddy. They do such a good job. I swore it was a dual narration.
