Hell Divers by Nicholas Sansbury Smith

Hell Divers introduces Xavier “X” Rodriguez, a hell diver aboard “The Hive,” which houses the remnants of humanity after a world-shattering conflict. When a distress call is received, he descends…

They dive into a dead world so the living can survive. But when the surface reveals its secrets, one man must choose between duty and redemption.

Hell Divers is the first book of the Hell Diver series.

Overview

Xavier “X” Rodriguez is a hell diver aboard “The Hive,” an airship that holds half of what is left of the human race. Centuries ago, humans destroyed the world with their bombs, leaving the surface uninhabitable. Or so they thought.

When the only other airship sends out a mayday, “The Hive” rushes to assist the last remaining half of humanity. They suffer damage and need their hell divers to go to the surface to get supplies for repairs. They dive so humanity survives.

Positives

This is my second time going through the series. There are more books now, so I’m looking forward to seeing how things have evolved since I left off.

Hell Divers is a fascinating post-apocalyptic world. From the environment on the surface to the way of life aboard the airships. You truly feel part of it.

We follow a few narratives. The primary is Xavier. He’s been diving for years, lasting longer than anyone has on The Hive. He has made many mistakes in his personal life. So he just dives until he dies, until after fulfilling a friend’s dying request, he finds something to live for truly. He goes from a character I dislike to one I admire.

Negatives

It is very dark, and there are lots of feelings of hopelessness. Honestly, if I didn’t know the trajectory and was reading for the first time, I might not have finished. I have to be in a specific state to handle all the negativity.

Recommendations

Rating: 5 out of 5.

If you don’t do doom and gloom, you may want to pass. I will say that the moments of hope and love really stand out. I still love the plot, world-building, and characters. It’s a five-star for me.

Narration Notes

R. C. Bray narrates the Hell Divers. He is a great choice to match the darkness and rough life of the Hell Divers universe.
