Freeing Luka book cover

The second book of the Clecanian series follows Alice and Luka. Love isn’t easy when trust is uncertain and boundaries are blurred.

Overview

Held captive in a secret PRIC facility, Alice and Luka are two strangers bonded by circumstance, trauma, and the fragile thread of fated connection. Alice seizes an opportunity to get all the captives out, including the drugged out of his mind Luka.

Now they must navigate their relationship. Luka only remembers bits and pieces, but he does know she’s his fated mate. Alice has always struggled with boundaries, and she feels horrible for touching him (not sexual) when he was unable to give consent. Will he ever forgive her? How can he earn her trust when he knows nothing about her?

Positives

Alice has a habit of needing to know the time to center herself. Luka catches on and helps her learn how to read her Clecanian watch. They let the relationship slowly build. By the time she figures out her watch, she finds it’s not as important now that she’s with Luka. I love it when authors can seamlessly weave in these metaphors.

Negatives

It’s a slow-burning romance, especially as they navigate their boundaries and try to understand their captivity. Because of this, there isn’t as much sexual buildup. None of this is bad, I just know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

Recommendations

As I mentioned earlier, not everyone will appreciate the slower pace. I enjoyed the emotional depth, though! I give it four stars.

Narration Notes

Narrated by Stephen Dexter, who also narrated Choosing Theo. Still enjoying his narration.
