Entertaining the Earl by Daphne Quinn

Entertaining the Earl, part of the Vows in Vauxhall Gardens series, follows bookish Susannah, who, at 22, has no marriage prospects. When the youthful Earl Collin proposes a fake courtship,…

She’d rather read Austen than marry. He’d rather dodge matchmaking mamas. A fake courtship in Vauxhall Gardens? What could go right?

Entertaining the Earl is the second book in the Vows in Vauxhall Gardens series. The stories stand alone, so enjoy at your leisure.

Overview

Susannah would rather have her nose in a book than chase after the eligible bachelors of the ton. This is part of the reason why she has yet to have any marriage prospects at the age of 22. With her dowry more well-known this season, her parents hope for better luck. They have also agreed to host an Earl who has been out of society for years.

Susannah’s expectation of an old, gray earl makes her speechless when Earl turns out to be 25 a 25-year-old Collin who walks in. He strikes up a deal: pretend to be courting her so her parents leave her to her books, and the desperate mothers of the ton leave him be. Does it ever work?

Positives

The magic of the Vauxhall Gardens strikes again. Susannah is a fellow bookworm and one of the first Janeites (loves Jane Austen), which makes her relatable. It’s a great twist to see an Austen fan set in the time of her rise to popularity.

The romance between Susannah and Collin is gentle and develops at a slow pace. There isn’t much physical intimacy, but an emphasis on emotional intimacy. As they each navigate their self-doubts, they grow into characters that enter the relationship as equals.

Negatives

I didn’t really see why it was beneficial for Susannah to enter the fake relationship. She didn’t appear too harassed by her family or prospects. If she were trying to improve her popularity or her parents were more intrusive, I would buy it.
