Deceived by the Highlander by Christina Phillips

In “Deceived by the Highlander,” Alasdair Campbell intends to marry Freyja MacDonald to acquire her lands but falls in love instead. Amidst secrets and the struggles of a female healer,…

He was sent to steal her land—but lost his heart instead. In a world of secrets and legends, love might be the most dangerous truth of all.

Deceived by the Highlander is the second book of the Daughters of the Isle series.

Overview

Alasdair Campbell is tasked with marrying Freyja MacDonald so that the lands she stands to inherit become Campbell lands. He just has to convince her to marry him. Then he meets her and finds that marrying her is what will make him the happiest man on Earth.

Freyja is a healer in a time when only male healers were respected. So when the new arrival is not only kind but supportive of her ambitions, she lowers her guard. Once married, she will be taken from her beloved Isles to her husband’s home.

But secrets have a way of being revealed.

Positives

In Beguiled by the Highlander, we are introduced to a family legend that the women lose their strength when taken from the Isle. I didn’t pay too much attention to it at the time. But we get a little more of it this time. It helps Freyja’s character development as she forges her own path.

Alasdair’s devotion and support for Freyja are so romantic. Not only does he look for the books she has mentioned, but she also dreamed of reading. He brings her mentors to help her refine her healing abilities. For me, that is a get-out-of-jail-free card for any transgressions.

Negatives

The secrets don’t come out until much later in the book. It seemed to take forever. By the time it came out, Alasdair had already proven that he truly loved and valued her for herself, not her lands.

Recommendations

Rating: 3 out of 5.

I have to give Deceived by the Highlander three stars. It’s a romantic read, but the deception loses its sting—definitely an excellent read for romance with a bit of spice and low stakes.
