“Beguiled by the Highlander” is the first book in the Daughters of the Isle series, featuring Isolde, who is betrothed to William Campbell but falls for an amnesiac stranger named…

A stranger with no name. A bride with no choice. When love defies duty, memory becomes the most dangerous secret of all.

Beguiled by the Highlander is the first book of the Daughters of the Isle series.

Overview

Isolde is betrothed to a man she’s never met, William Campbell. She hates that she will have to leave her beloved home. Then a stranger washes ashore, near death. When he awakens, he has no memory of who he is. They may have no idea who he is, but she knows how she feels about him.

When his memory comes back, will it change everything? Will their feelings for each other be the same? How can Isolde escape marrying William to be with her true love?

Positives

Beguiled by the Highlander starts as a forbidden love. They give the stranger who washed ashore the name Njord; they have to call him something after all. Then, when he gets his memories back, things get messy. Isolde has to deal with reality. She had built up Njord as her perfect man, but in fact, he’s just a man with flaws like all the others. I think she overreacted, but that was part of her development as a character.

We have a great couple with an interesting plot. There is a bit of a whodunit, but we, as readers, aren’t given enough information at the start to try to solve it ourselves before our leading characters do. However, it is enough for you to want to continue seeing who it was.

Negatives

There are some spelling and grammatical errors throughout, although they are not a significant problem. I had more of a problem with the depth of emotions and supporting characters falling short. The supporting characters just exist; we know a bit about the grandmother, but everyone else hardly exists. As for the depth of emotion, except for Isolde’s reaction to Njord’s true identity, everything else was flat.

Recommendations

Rating: 3 out of 5.

I did still enjoy the story. I always love a strong female lead who doesn’t need a man. It’s three stars for me. If you love Scottish historical romance, it’s a good light read, but not something to return to again and again.
