Overview
Ella is on a mission to clear her mother’s name. Her family has run Keatley Hall School for Boys for generations. She has to marry to keep it in the family. So much to do in so little time. When a former student reaches out to her about the symposium keynote speaker, the opportunity arises to clear her mother’s name. But can she do it without losing the school that has been the center of her entire life?

Positives
Ella is a woman in a man’s world. Her mother instilled a fierce curiosity in her. Pain that, with her fearlessness, you really do get an unconventional lady of the Regency era. I’ve seen it done often in my historical romances (LINK), but Sarah E. Ladd does it differently. Usually, authors have to create an altered history, but Sarah E. Ladd does so within the confines of society. I could really see this happening.
The author puts just as much work into the rest of the cast. The love interest, Gabriel, is so charming in an almost understated way, counterbalancing Ella’s boldness. Meanwhile, the plot and world-building are just as complementary. Using the study and history of phrenology as a basis encourages Ella’s questioning mindset.
Negatives
If you’re looking for any spice, you won’t find it here. The author really focuses on their emotional bond to create a solid foundation for their relationship. But there’s no loss in chemistry. You can feel their love and attraction for each other without any sensual moments.
