She’s sworn off love. He’s hiding a secret. But when sparks fly, can two guarded hearts risk everything for a chance at something real?
Almost A Scoundrel is the first book in the Ladies Who Dare series.
Overview
Lady Phaedra Smart has sworn to live the life of a spinster. She has a large dowry, but that’s the problem. How can she know the man is marrying her for love of the money? Her aunt married for what she thought was love, but she was deceived. Phaedra won’t fall into that trap. So spinster she will become.
Deerhurst can’t marry; he can’t risk his secret getting out. So he keeps to himself, but when he finds himself alone with the beautiful Lady Phaedra, he falters. As his feelings grow, so do the secrets. He finds himself dreaming of a life with her. If he convinces her to marry him, will she also forgive him for the secrets?

Positives
I don’t think I’ve ever highlighted as many passages in a book. Most of them because the retorts were so funny, I snorted with laughter. Very unladylike. The Smart women are strong women who have the best comebacks.
Almost a Scoundrel has a little modern twist on the Regency Era. I think the author wants to give us an alternative where women have a little more control over their lives. Go feminism!
I pretty much read it in one sitting. After chapter three, I was hooked. The plot maintains its momentum for the most part. I loved the characters; there was just one part that was hard for me to believe.
Negatives
I have a little issue with when Deerhurst and Phaedra have their significant disagreement. I have difficulty believing their reasoning- either side. So it feels drawn out excessively. There were also a few grammatical errors, but not enough to hurt the pacing.
Recommendations
If you loved the first season of Bridgerton, you will love this book. At first, I felt it was a little too similar to Bridgerton, but our main characters have different personalities and reasons. I give it four stars.
