Freya hides her magic, hates her husband, and longs for battle. But when fate calls, she must wield her power—or be destroyed by it.
A Fate Inked in Blood is the first book in the Saga of the Unfated series.
Overview
Freya is discontent with how her life has turned out. She has a husband she hates and powers she needs to keep hidden. But in a moment, her dreams of fighting for her home in battle become reality. She now finds herself married to the jarl and training her powers for battle.
Nothing is what it seems. The jarl, who dreams of being king, is her husband in name only. Someone is revealing secrets to the enemy. Freya has to watch her back, as anyone can be the traitor, even if they’re not; there are many reasons why people want her dead. She also needs to hide these feelings she has for her husband’s son.

Positives
I absolutely love the Nordic influence. I’ve done a lot of research into mythology myself and am impressed with the author’s faithfulness to the legends. She still manages to make it unique. Norse mythology can be a bit dark and twisted, but the author manages to lighten it up.
The characters are all well-developed. Their complexity adds to the mystery of who is betraying whom. Our heroine is imperfect, but she tries to improve herself, though. To me, she went from her biggest flaw being vanity to being her temper. Which was entirely valid, she has every right to be angry after everything.
Negatives
I felt the pacing was a little slow. There were many points when I looked at the amount completed and was shocked that so little had actually happened. I still enjoyed the plot.
Recommendations
A Fate Inked in Blood is definitely a must-read for fantasy romance fans. The Nordic influence makes it stand out. I give it four stars.
Narration Notes
I purchased the audiobook on Audible; it was worth the credit. Nina Yontis is the narrator, and she does a great job, especially with all the names.
