Sunlight hides savagery. To claim the Metal Islands, X and Mags must survive a paradise built on blood—while Michael races to save them from afar.
Captives is the fifth book in the Hell Divers series. The series is written to be read in sequential order.
Overview
X and Mags have found the Metal Islands, a place where the sun shines and there is no threat of radiation. The people there fish and farm to make a living. They also fight each other to the death like the gladiators in Ancient Rome, then they eat them. Any hope of coexistence ends there. They are going to have to fight to acquire the islands.
Michael and Katrina use their recent discoveries at Red Sphere to forge new alliances and come up with a plan to rescue X, Mags, and Miles while securing the Metal Islands for themselves. No matter what, people are going to die.

Positives
Captives doesn’t disappoint when it comes to the high-stakes world-building we’ve come to expect from Hell Divers. The cannibalistic Cazadon adds to the threats our heroes and heroines have to overcome.
X and Mags continue to grow. Captivity doesn’t just pose physical threats; it’s psychological, too. Roger is an excellent example of the growth needed to survive. His personality has been dramatically altered.
Negatives
Captives has a lot of moving parts. Each of the narratives we follow is set in a different location, facing distinct and interconnected threats. While listening to the audiobook, I had to go back a few times to figure out where we were.
Recommendations
Once again, if you’re in it for the action, you won’t be disappointed. I feel the fast pace and complex plot weren’t the wisest choices together. I’ll have to give it three stars. It was a bit overwhelming to balance everything at the climax.
Narration Notes
R. C. Bray narrates the series. He is a great choice to match the hard life and trials that the hell divers and the survivors endure.
