Tracer by Brendan Deneen

She moved like a shadow—silent, lethal, unfeeling. But this mission was different. The lies she’d swallowed for years were unraveling, and with them, her armor. A flicker of hope, a…

She was trained to kill, not to feel. But when the mission unravels, so does everything she thought she knew—about loyalty, love, and herself.

Overview

Tracer, AKA Trace, has only ever been wanted for what she can provide, not because she was loved. Sold to the President as a child by her adoptive parents, she has spent years honing her tracking and killing skills to complete the missions the President assigns to her. This latest mission keeps going from bad to worse.

Along the way to completing her mission, she is confronted with the lies of her upbringing, broken promises, and the elusive hope. She finds herself doing and feeling things she hasn’t in years. Can she find the courage to reclaim control of her life and perhaps make a difference?

Positives

It is a fascinating concept…in a world where our overconsumption has led to the depletion of nonrenewable resources. We must utilize all the resources that were wasted in the production of fuel to create more fuel. Plastic=fuel.

I always like it when our leading lady is a bit rough around the edges. They feel more real. Trace’s transformation is well-developed. However, she is the only character who has any significant growth. I can argue a few supporting characters regaining their courage or sense of self.

Negatives

Some conversations felt underdeveloped. Most probably won’t notice it, but I’m picky about conversations feeling natural. These conversations felt very formal, as if they were written in a grammatically correct manner, when a speaker would infer parts instead of verbally stating them.

The romance fell a bit flat at some points. The build-up was good as she was coming to terms with having a romantic partner, though it got a bit awkward. I think it was more of a delivery. Like when they randomly kiss in the middle of a rescue mission.

Recommendations

Rating: 3 out of 5.

It starts dark like Blade Runner, then shifts to a more Mad Max vibe. I give it three stars; it could have been better. But I really did enjoy the concept.

I received a complimentary Advanced Reader Copy(ARC) of the book for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own and reflect my genuine reading experience. Receiving the ARC did not influence my evaluation, and I was not compensated for this review.
