The Twisted Throne by Danielle L. Jensen

Bound by duty, haunted by guilt, Ahnna enters a kingdom ruled by secrets. Her betrothed is a drunken prince—but his bastard brother, James, is everything she shouldn’t want. As political…

She’s promised to a prince. He’s the bastard brother she can’t ignore. In a kingdom built on lies, love might be the most dangerous betrayal of all.

The Twisted Throne is the fifth book in the Bridge Kingdom series. Each book builds upon the last, so while it’s a new couple, it’s best to read the previous four books.

Overview

Ahnna has to leave Ithaca to escape her own guilt. She has agreed to honor the agreement her mother made to marry the Prince of Harendell. Only problem… William is an idiot drunk. But his “bastard” brother James is smart, brave, and strong. Everything she respects in a man, and she has this draw to him.

James is the love-child of King Edward. Being a bastard is strain enough, but his mother was Cardiffian, and the people were believed to be witches. He has to be perfect in every way to prevent the people from turning on him, no matter how much his father loved and protected him. So falling for his brother’s betrothed is not an option.

Ahnna and James are at the mercy of political motives. Everyone wants a piece of what someone else has. Lies and deceit are around every corner.

Positives

So I was hesitant because I hadn’t liked Ahnna in previous books, but we really get to see her in a new light. We know the conflict and pain she feels. It’s always great to see an author convince the reader to change their opinion of a character.

I would like to point out the world-building. Now that we have come to yet another new location, we get to see the diversity in weather patterns. That shows just how in-depth the world-building is and why so many of us are in love with it.

Negatives

It ends with a cliffhanger, as expected. Only a bad thing because we still have to wait until at least January 2026 to get a resolution. The romance is almost chaste, so don’t expect much spice.

Recommendations

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I have a mildly mixed opinion on the rating for The Twisted Throne. For the majority of the book, I would only give a four, but the last two chapters are intense. So overall five stars

Narration Notes

Max Rolland and Summer Roberts narrate Ahnna and James’ story. Not only do they do a great job, but the sound effects are also improving since the beginning of the series.
