For a Warrior’s Heart by Laura Strickland

He wears the life of the man he may have killed—his bed, his burdens, his sister. Ardahl walks a cursed path, where honor binds and magic whispers. As truth unravels…

He wears the life of the man he may have killed. She’s the sister of the fallen. In a land ruled by honor and magic, can love survive the truth?

For a Warrior’s Heart is the first book of the Ancient Songs series.

Overview

Ardahl Mac Cormac doesn’t know how it happened. One minute, his best friend is agitated with him; the next, his best friend has a blade through the heart. Ardahl’s hands are covered in blood. The tribe’s druids decide that instead of sentencing a well-needed warrior to death, Ardahl should take the place of his fallen friend. Ardahl is no longer; he must live his fallen friend’s life, sleep in his bed, and provide for his family.

Even as all despise him, he slowly makes amends. His feelings for his best friend’s sister, who is now his foster sister, grow. The truth of what truly occurred between Ardahl and his best friend slowly comes to light. Do Ardahl and Liadan dare to hope that his name will be cleared so they can be together as husband and wife?

Positives

I love the little bit of magic entwined in the story. It’s a mystical touch to a story full of forbidden love, loss, and pain. Just when the story gets dark, a hint of magic arrives to carry us through with our hero.

It was difficult for me to adjust to reading at first. It is written in a way that embraces the highland life, even their speech. I’m not used to this, so I was slow for the first few chapters. But I was already enthralled in trying to solve how Ardahl and Conall ended up in that fateful fight.

Negatives

Like I mentioned, it is written in a way that embraces the highland era, so you may have to get used to it.

I have a minor issue with the ending; it felt rushed and anticlimactic. So much detail was put into the other battles and homecomings. I feel like there should have been more.

Recommendations

Rating: 4 out of 5.

If you love the highland romances, you’ll like For a Warrior’s Heart too. It is heavy on the forbidden love and loss. I give it four stars
