Just About A Rake by Tonya Wilde

Just About a Rake, the fifth book in the Ladies Who Dare series, follows Leonora, a savvy flirt, and Rake Sloane, the Earl of Dare, as they navigate family secrets…

She’s a scandal-savvy flirt with secrets. He’s a rake with a conscience. Together, they’re one rumor away from ruin—or a love worth daring everything.

Just About a Rake is the fifth book in the Ladies Who Dare series. This one can really be read as a standalone.

Overview

Leonora has vowed to savor the pleasures of the moment. Since overhearing the family’s secret on her fourteenth birthday, she knows you are one nasty rumor away from being ruined. She always looks at one’s actions instead of their words, which is why she can so easily befriend Rake Sloane, the Earl of Dare.

Dare has lived up to the name his father gave him, Rake. He saw what his father’s infidelities did to his mother; he won’t do that to another. He definitely couldn’t do it to his favourite flirt, Leonora. But as they unravel their families’ mysteries, their bond grows. Can he really bear to watch her marry another?

Positives

The scandal and fire I have come to expect from the Ladies Who Dare have returned for Just About a Rake. From the very first chapter, I was enthralled. The pace was so consistent. I couldn’t wait to solve the mysteries!

Leonora comes off as a free spirit, but she’s not. She has a thirst for life but is very calculative. She’s got everything figured out, and she’ll stand her ground.

The animals play an interesting role. They’re definitely a comedic relief and revealer of secrets. But I also think they reflect both Leonora’s and Dare’s desire to remain wild and free.

Negatives

It’s not really a bad thing, but there’s no connection with the rest of the series, except for supporting characters and a woman’s trousers reference. It’s just that the first three are so intertwined; the whole A Little Bit of Hellion and definitely Just About A Rake can be read on their own. I’m hoping Only a Duke ties them together again.

Recommendations

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I got concerned after A Little Bit of Hellion, but Just About a Rake delivers all the scandal and spunk I love from the series. It gets five stars. I didn’t want to put it down!
