A Hint of Scandal by Fil Reid

In “A Hint of Scandal,” Captain Max Aubrey, battling an injury, fears love is beyond reach until he meets Serafina Gilbert, who cares for her family. Their shared passion for…

She’s hidden in plain sight. He’s haunted by injury and doubt. But when history brings them together, love might rewrite both their futures.

A Hint of Scandal is the second book of the Mismatched Loves. All the books can be read standalone.

Overview

Captain Max Aubrey is back from the military with an injury. The doctors were able to save his arm, but there is no feeling or ability to move it. His family would like him to get married now, but he worries no one will want him with his bad arm. Then he meets Serafina. They connect with shared interests, mostly history. Could she see past his useless arm and find a way to love him?

Serafina Gilbert is at the mercy of her much older brother and his wife, who took her in as a child. Now a woman of 22, she has never been given a chance to search for a husband. She’s so busy raising her nieces and nephews. Her eldest niece is debuting this season, while she looks out for her niece, she comes upon the most handsome man. He doesn’t seem bothered by her strangeness; could she dare to hope he may love her too?

Positives

A Regency era Cinderella story. Where Cinderella found solace in her critter friends, Serafina saw it in her history books. Max is her prince charming, rescuing her from servitude. Through all her hardships, Serafina remains kind and loving.

There is a bit of a twist that I didn’t see coming. I didn’t even read the jacket, so I went in blind. We don’t have to wait too long for them to get together, but it does take a bit to realize their feelings for each other. During that time, they have a mystery to resolve.

Negatives

While I was surprised by the twist, I figured it out pretty quickly. A Hint of Scandal is predictable; there isn’t anything groundbreaking.

Recommendations

Rating: 3 out of 5.

While it may be predictable, that can add to the cozy charm. Sometimes we need something predictable to counteract the crazy in our lives. I give it three stars; it’s ultimately forgettable, but a great cozy read for when life is too unpredictable.
