Rejected by her fated mate and cast out by her pack, Avery discovers her wolf—and her worth. Now the alpha wants redemption, but is it too late?
Alpha’s Burden is the first book in the Rejecting Fates series.
Overview
Avery has spent the last seven years on her own, caring for her two younger siblings. Her pack treats her like a leper because her father challenged the previous alpha. It doesn’t help that she’s wolfless. Or is she?
During a complete moon bonfire, the mate bond songs are in place. Her mate is Alpha Caden, who proceeds to reject her in front of the pack. As she leaves, she hears “her,” her wolf, and has her first shift. She tries to pick up her pieces, but Caden is surprisingly clingy, and some members of the pack are talking to her again. Could her life finally be getting better?

Positives
Avery is a badass! She gets the job done, no matter what. She had to learn to use the land, since it was the only resource available to her. Taking herbs with medicinal qualities, she trades with her packmates in secret. She deserved this happy ending. That painful rejection was just icing on the cake.
When Caden finally notices her again (they were bff’s as kids) and her situation, he realizes he didn’t just make one mistake, but a series of errors. He decides to fix everything he can and hopefully become worthy of her.
Negatives
Alpha’s Burden has a rhythm problem. It feels like three separate books: the romance, the alpha summit meeting, and the coup against Caden. I would have made the summit a more passive event and added more about the pack’s tension during the romance.
Recommendations
Despite the pacing issue, it has the ingredients for a good rejected mate romance. I give it a solid four stars; the plot is still very memorable. Even amongst all the other plots I read, this one still stuck out months later.
