Decadence is the fourth book in the Darkstar Mercenaries series.

Overview

Ikriss rescues Sienna from her alien captors. Sienna endured unspeakable torture at the orders of her Kordolian “owner”. Ikriss is in awe of this little human’s strength. Now that she’s awake, all she wants is to get back to her bakery.

The problem is, they still have no idea why she was targeted. She was a high-profile victim. Why would they take her instead of someone less likely to be noticed? Ikriss is determined to find out and keep her safe. He even goes as far as applying to be her apprentice at the bakery, after all, he has an impressive resume. He even printed it on paper!

Positives

Ikriss is deadly; he is the weapon, but for Sienna, he is nothing but tenderness and protection. Sienna recognises his patience and love for her. At one point, Ikriss is injured and unable to have physical contact, so she decides to make his food. He usually just eats Kordolian protein bars, but when he gets the protein pack dishes from Sienna, he realizes food can be more than sustenance.

Negatives

While Decadence can be read as a standalone, it has numerous references to events and characters from both the previous Darkstar Mercenaries Series and the original Dark Planet Warriors. It’s best enjoyed when read in order.

Recommendations

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Decadence still has all of what we love from Anna Craven. Rich world-building, we are even getting more intergalactic political tension, good character development, and a big, scary Kordolian with a heart of gold. It’s four stars for me. I would have liked a little more variation in Ikriss’s personality; it felt like he was a copy and paste with just a different background story.
