“Shit, girl! I heard he doesn’t even eat the meat!”

If reading in order, we return to the Quarry pack for Mari’s story. We are shocked at the end of The Tyrant Alpha’s Rejected Mate with the news that Mari is already mated. But to whom?
It took me a long time to break down and read/listen to this book. I have a distaste for age gaps. I’m concerned that it puts younger individuals at a disadvantage in the relationship. Cate C. Wells does it wonderfully, though. The older male does what he can to make sure his mate has power. So glad I gave it a try!
Overview
Mari is “delicate sweet, romantic cottage core”; meanwhile, Darrow is the pants I wore last week are fine, and “No shoes, no shirt, no problem.” After the mating, he left, just as her father and mother had. Mari is distraught. What about her makes her parents and mate okay with just abandoning her? Well, fuck fate, she doesn’t need a mate.
Positives
Cate C. Wells knows how to break a heart. Mari’s character is beautifully crafted, and her development throughout the story is *chef’s kiss*. There’s a point when Mari makes a realization about their relationship that highlights her fault. I don’t think I would be able to make the same realization without being prompted. I’m impressed.
Negatives
Albertha drove me nuts in this story! I’ve tried to look at it from different perspectives, but couldn’t. She kept coming off as self-righteous. I don’t know if it was the narrator, a character error on the author’s part, or a way to show that we can all come across as a very different person based on another’s perspective. Anyway, she annoyed me every time she showed up.
Overall
This book qualifies as a five-star read based on my requirements, but I think it feels more like a 4.5-star read. All the books in the series can be read as standalones. I was able to read them out of order and still enjoyed each one on its own.
