A shield maiden’s quest for revenge collides with a chief’s hidden truth, sparking forbidden love on the Scottish shore. For a Viking’s Heart is the fourth book in the Ancient Songs series. Each book is a stand-alone, so you don’t need to rush through the first three.
Romance Snapshot:
- Emotional Intimacy 5/5: There are some significant emotional transformations. It has themes of forgiveness and unconditional love.
- Physical Intimacy 3/5: There are some open-door scenes with details, but they aren’t explicit.
Overview
Hulda heads to the Scottish shore to find the man who killed her brother in battle. Meanwhile, Quarrie’s father never fully recovered from the fight last season. He assumes his father’s role of chief. When the sister of the man his father killed before being injured himself arrives on his shore, he protects his father. Quarrie announces it was he who killed her brother.
When they returned to the ship, a fellow warrior informed her that Quarrie wasn’t the man. She already had admiration and attraction for him. Her fellow warriors want blood, and she couldn’t bear to see him harmed for something he didn’t do.

Positives
This dynamic was a significant change in my historical romance reads. Hulda and Querrie are evenly matched in every way. They can support and understand each other because of this. Their love is forbidden, so they try to keep it secret. Luckily, it all works out in the end.
Even though Norse culture allowed female warriors (shield maidens), they probably weren’t treated equally. The author captures this female warrior in a man’s world. To this day, we still experience this. I can’t tell you how many fellow sailors hated that I, as a woman, was allowed to do the same job as them. For every hater, some saw me as an equal and supported me. Hulda’s experience is spot-on.
Negatives
There are two things I still don’t get. First, why would Hulda seek revenge in the first place? He went to battle; the risks were known, so why does she feel unfairly robbed? Secondly, this is series-wide; I don’t get the bard that introduces and closes each book. I don’t think his introduction really improves the experience.
Recommendation
For a Viking’s Heart is an excellent, slow-burning, forbidden love romance. It honestly covers themes like feminism, revenge, and grief. I give it four stars.
