Captive of the Horde King book cover

Zoey Draven’s Captive of the Horde King kicks off the Horde Kings of Dakkar series. This series is a trustworthy fallback when I need protective, yet emotionally aware, alien mates with their strong human women.

Overview

Humans have settled on the alien plane of Dakkar. Luna belongs to one of these settlements. When a Horde King arrives demanding her brother pay for his violation of their planet, she offers herself as payment for her younger brother’s crime. What begins as a transaction in her eyes becomes something to cherish.

She’s lived on Dakkar all her life, yet knows nothing of their ways. Now she is completely submerged in the Horde culture. If she hopes to help her brother, she needs to learn to navigate this culture and create the change required for both species to survive.

Positives

Luna begins the story scared, hungry, and powerless. After being taken captive, she finds her strength and power. Her Horde king husband encourages and nurtures this growth. Luna’s character development is beautiful.

Draven has created a complex world, from the cold, run-down human settlement to the “glamping” of the Horde camp. The Dakarri culture is intriguing and different, creating some issues in Luna’s ability to adapt to Horde life.

Negatives

There aren’t any negatives, but I would have liked a little more information about the Dakkari culture. But I respect Draven’s decision to take smaller steps into it. If you continue with the series, you’ll see that she delves a little deeper into the culture in each subsequent story.

Recommendation

This is an easy 5-star for me. If you enjoy Ruby Dixon’s Barbarian Planet series, you’ll likely appreciate this one as well; the stories are simply longer.
