If you are a fan of the rejected mate trope and second-chance romances, Broken by the Horde King will be on your must-read list. While Broken by the Horde King is the fourth book in the Horde Kings of Dakkar series, it can be read as a standalone. However, Zoey Draven expertly builds a back story in each book that sets up the next book, so it’s best when read in series.

Overview
Maeva is a human whom the Dakkari raised. A hunter found her as a young child abandoned in the woods. She is befriended by a horde prince, Kiran. As they grew up, she fell in love. Kiran didn’t return her passion, and ultimately, it shattered her heart.
Nine years later, he’s back and traps her into being his horde’s doctor. She swears it’s only for the frost, but he intends to keep her there, as his queen.
Positives
We finally get to see a little more of Dakkar, outside of the capital and hordes. It highlights Zoey Draven’s world-building skills.
I adore Maeva’s strength and determination. There seems to be some themes of trauma response, a testament to the author’s character development. From Maeva’s muteness as a child to her borderline destructive actions after the rejection, they’re common trauma responses.
Negatives
I have a distaste for Kiran. I love Maeva’s character so much; I think she deserves better. Redeemingly, he feels that, too.
Recommendations
If I remind myself that they’re a different species and culture, his actions are more forgivable. For this reason, I raise it from 3 stars to 4 stars.
