Pursued is the fourth book in the Raider Warlords of the Vandar series. There are some recurring supporting characters throughout the series, but for the most part, the descriptions are sufficient to allow the story to be read standalone.
Overview
After Kratos’ retirement, he left Bron as the new Raas. He has a lot to prove to his crew. Itching for a battle, he leads the boarding of a Zagrath vessel, only to find a single, abandoned female. He knows something is off, so he tries to keep Alana at arm’s length. Her seduction isn’t helping.
Alana has acquired the nickname “Mantis” – as in the praying mantis. She is known for using seduction to get close to her victims. Being a weapon of the empire has taken its toll on her. This latest target has her doubling her orders and wishing to be free.
Positives
It’s a new dynamic with Alana being an assassin. While the female leads in the Raider Warlords of the Vandar are typically strong, some readers may not realize this until later in the book. In Pursued, Alana is already confident in her abilities; what she needs is to remember her vulnerability.
Negatives
The plot has some weak points. The characters’ lack of depth highlights these aspects. Bron and Alana both have extensive experience in giving opportunities to explore the depth of their emotions. It fell short; the ending scene lacks the intended feelings because the emotions weren’t already present.
Recommendations
Pursued delivers on the steamy alien romance. If you’re looking for emotional depth with your spice, this might not be for you. I give it three stars. It’s still a solid read.
Narration Notes
Marcio Catalano and Addison Barnes narrate the audiobook. Both do a great job. I really enjoy Marcio Catalano’s narration for all the male characters.
