The Zagrath: A Cautionary Tale of Modern Society

Tana Stone’s Raider Warlords of the Vandar series uses the Zagrath to mirror society’s elite. Once the top 1% on Earth, they depleted resources and fled to space, paralleling modern…

They didn’t just flee Earth—they destroyed it. The Zagrath’s rise in Raider Warlords of the Vandar is a mirror we’re afraid to look into.

I love it when a book causes us to reflect on something that goes beyond its plot and genre. In Tana Stone’s Raider Warlords of the Vandar series, the Zagrath are a chilling echo of our own society’s trajectory.

Quick History of Zagrath

Once the top 1% of Earth’s population, the Zagrath drained the planet of its resources, then fled to space. They genetically modified themselves into “superhumans” so they could ravage alien worlds for centuries. Unfortunately, this isn’t just a dystopian story; it’s a cautionary tale that felt too eerily familiar.

Earth’s Elite: Then and Now

Here are the similarities I kept noticing while reading Punished.

Zagrath (Then)                    Modern Day (Now)
Top 1% of Earth’s populationTop 1% global wealth holders
Extracted Earth’s resources until collapseProfits from burning fossil fuels, cutting down forests, and harmful industries.
Fled Earth to dominate spaceInvest in space tourism, private bunkers, and climate escape plans
Genetically changed to be the strongest Use biotech, AI, and monopolies to consolidate power.
Conquered alien civilizationsControl the world’s laws, media, and businesses to keep control.

Both groups are entitled and have no problems using others for their personal gain and to satisfy their need to dominate.

The Myth of Superiority

The Zagrath used genetic engineering not just to survive, but to become bigger and stronger than everyone else. Today, the powerful do the same with things like biohacking, AI, and technology. It’s all about staying on top, being the top dog.

The pursuit of superiority comes at a cost; someone else always pays the price.

Just like the Zagrath leaving the Earth in ruins, today’s wealthiest often leave the rest of the world to deal with the price of their choices. Climate change, loss of natural resources, and a shaky economy impact people in the lower class and future generations the most. While billionaires invest in bunkers, Mars colonies, and private islands, the rest of us are left to navigate the mess left behind.

Resource Exploitation as a Legacy

The Zagrath left their Earth a husk—today’s billionaires fund ventures that continue to deplete ecosystems, often in the name of progress. Fossil fuel empires, fast fashion, and labor exploitation are the modern counterparts of what the Zagrath did. The only difference today is that it is real and we are watching it happen right now.

What Stories Like This Teach Us?

Science fiction isn’t just a way to escape from our world; it’s a new way to understand our present. The Zagrath shows us the dangers of what happens when technology gets too powerful, with nobody to check it. The Vandar are fierce warlords who show us what it takes to fight back and win justice, no matter how messy or emotional the fight gets.

What do we do with this?

The Zagrath didn’t just advance, they abandoned. And in many ways, our own elite are doing the same.
